Message from the GMF Chair

 Karen Leibovici    Welcome 2011!

Looking back on 2010, we are proud to remember some great milestones for the Fund — our 10th anniversary, the launch of our updated funding offer and new application form, and last but far from least, our move to a new green office space at 10 Rideau Street in Ottawa for which we are awaiting LEED® certification.

After 10 years of administering GMF, it’s very encouraging to see so many municipalities developing their interest and expertise in undertaking environmental projects.

Over the last few months in particular, we’ve seen a significant surge in the number of applications to GMF to support these excellent initiatives. Municipalities are showing themselves to be true leaders in environmental projects and the high volume of applications is an indication of that growing expertise and commitment.

On the flip side of this success is the need to manage this very high volume of applications. As of mid-February, we are no longer accepting new applications for plans, studies and tests, or for capital projects in energy, waste, water and transportation. Our GMF team is working hard to process all of the applications received to date, and will be providing information by July 31, 2011, as to when new applications for these types of initiatives can be submitted. Applications for brownfield capital projects can still be submitted at any time. Contact GMF staff for help with your current or prospective application.

This February, we had the great pleasure of holding our annual FCM Sustainable Communities Conference (SCC) and Trade Show outside of Ottawa for the first time since its inception in 2001.

The City of Victoria, in partnership with the Capital Regional District, B.C., hosted SCC delegates for three days of excellent sustainability programming aligned under the conference theme: Embracing Change for Sustainability: Innovative governance, partnerships and financing. With over 600 delegates and more than 50 keynote presentations, plenaries, sessions, workshops, panels and study tours, it’s not hard to see why the SCC has become the premier municipal conference on sustainable community development in Canada. Be sure to check out the FCM website for conference videos, summaries, presentations, and much more.

This issue’s theme is water: one of our most precious resources and one of GMF’s key funding sectors. Find out about the issues, trends, emerging technologies, and current and best practices in the water sector through the resources, case studies, and award-winning projects highlighted in this newsletter.

If you weren’t able to join us in Victoria for the SCC, we hope to see you at the 2011
FCM Annual Conference and Municipal Expo, June 3 to 6 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, or at the 2011 FCM Sustainable Communities Mission, August 7 to 12 in Quebec.

Best wishes for a sustainable year ahead and, as always, we welcome your feedback.
